![]() OneDrive Mac single-handedly consumes 2.5 of the 10 cores constantly and the battery lasts just a few hours. Now, three months later, the company has finally made the. I recently got an M1Max Macbook Pro, expecting amazing performance and all-day battery-life. Microsoft last December released a public beta of the OneDrive sync utility for macOS with native support for the Apple Silicon platform. But it's a terrible experience for mac users. As with Apple's poor file-sync implementation, I believe this is technical mediocrity, not a lock-in strategy. Onedrive sucks up all their files to the cloud, deletes local copies, and then there is not practical way to get them back. There must be mac users at risk of losing data over this: ie. Because trying to do it via Mac is a total fail. In fact, it's the only way I can retrieve files in bulk out of OneDrive and onto local storage. OneDrive on Windows10 works great for me. I thought, with the Tb allowance, I could keep all my old work copied offsite and available from all machines, but I realise now that Backblaze is the better solution for that. They grind to a halt with higher numbers of files. I'm beginning to realise that OneDrive and iCloud Drive on Mac are OK to sync a few hundred files, a few gigabytes, invisibly, in about an hour, between machines, and offer web access. But I resent paying their fee when I am already paying for iCloud storage (2Tb) and Microsoft 365 (1Tb). It is fast, reliable, user-friendly, and shows you what's happening. iCloud Drive seems to work badly also.įor me, the benchmark is DropBox. I heard that iCloud Drive uses MS Azure on the back-end? (can anyone confirm?) If you're saying that Apple's new solution for file-sync is the problem - hiding the file system and sync-progress from users, huge cpu-burden, very slow servers - that makes sense to me. I think the old Microsoft vs Apple rivalry is expired no? MS Office works well on Mac and iOS.
